There's no single right age to start music lessons. Houston Conservatory of Music welcomes students of every age and ability, from young children just starting out to adults picking up an instrument for the first time, and readiness matters more than hitting a specific birthday.
For young children, signs of readiness tend to matter more than age itself: the ability to sit and focus for a short stretch, curiosity about an instrument, and willingness to follow simple directions. Some children are ready at five or six, while others benefit from waiting a year or two and starting with more focus and patience.
For families not quite ready to commit to one-on-one private lessons, our Music and Movement class, for ages two through six, offers a playful, low pressure introduction to rhythm and musical expression before a child moves into private instruction.
Older children, teens, and adults don't face the same readiness questions, since attention span and motivation are usually already there. At any age, a free trial lesson is a simple, low pressure way to find out if the timing feels right before enrolling.
