Private Lessons vs. Weekend Group Classes: What's Right for Your Family?

September 2, 2026

Students and families at a Houston Conservatory of Music community event

Houston Conservatory of Music's membership plans combine weekly private lessons with weekend group classes, and families often ask how the two fit together. Private lessons are one-on-one time with a teacher, focused entirely on an individual student's technique, repertoire, and pace. This is where the bulk of technical progress happens.

Group classes, held on weekends, give students a different kind of experience: playing and learning alongside peers, building ensemble skills, music theory, and the simple confidence that comes from performing with others. They're included with membership and organized by age and level, from Music & Movement for our youngest students to Vocal Ensemble and Music Ensemble for more advanced players.

Our current group classes include Music and Movement for ages two through six, Music Theory for ages six and up, Group Piano for ages eight through fourteen, and Vocal Ensemble and Music Ensemble for students ready for by level, collaborative repertoire.

Most families get the most out of both together, using private lessons to build individual skill and group classes to put it into practice socially. You can see current plans and pricing on our Membership Plans page.
